”ANYTHING that zips, our motto is that we fix it,” said Marvin Rosen, co owner of Superior Leather Restorers. The 58 year old firm repairs zippers on dresses, leather jackets, duffle bags, trousers, ski parkas, handbags, coats, backpacks, briefcases, luggage, wallets, cosmetic cases you name it; they even fix tent zippers.
Whenever possible, zippers are repaired; if they are beyond repair, they must be replaced.
”If the binding is not worn or torn, and the zipper is not missing any teeth, I can 99 percent of the time repair it,” said Thea Rosen, Mr. Rosen’s wife and co owner of the shop.
Repairs start at $15 and can sometimes be done the same day. Zipper replacements start at $25 and take one week to 10 days. For an additional $7.50, rush jobs can be completed in a week.
Zippers come in brass, plastic or aluminum, up to 72 inches long and in several colors. Zippers can also be custom made in unusual shades. Two way zippers for items like ski parkas are also available.
Another big problem, Mr. Rosen said, is that women often leave tissue paper in their handbags; eventually it gets caught in the zipper, jamming it. And ”most people don’t zip zippers down all the way,” he said.
”Then they pull them up and pull the teeth out of them,” he said.
Mrs. Rosen offered this tip: ”If you go to a humid climate, take an old toothbrush and rub Vaseline on a brass zipper,” she said. ”That helps prevent it from oxidizing.”
Superior Leather Restorers is at 133 Lexington Avenue, at 29th Street. 212 889 7211.

”We’ve even done wet suits before,” he said.
Repair charges start at $10; replacing a zipper is $25 and up. Repairs can usually be done while you wait; replacements take 10 days to two weeks.
